Overview : Buzios is a magnificent little resort town. It’s located about a 100 miles north of Rio and seems to be a favorite of the Rio elite. Prices are comparable to New York City and there is definitely a sophisticated upper-class feeling to the place. People are warm and friendly. The coble stones, winding roads and boutiques are quite charming. The big draw to Buzios, apart from the who’s who of Rio, are the beaches – 20 in all. The beaches range from low key hippy beaches to upscale resort beaches with beachside dining. There is also scuba and surfing in Buzios.
Things to see and do : Buzios offers an array of activities like, scuba diving, surfing, boat tours, fishing, tennis, golf, etc. But basically we just stuck to the beach. I went with a buddy and we had an excellent time soaking up the Brazilian sun, drinking beer and chatting with the locals. Our favorite beach was Azeda Beach. This is a cool little beach with a hip crowd. Take a water taxi from downtown for a couple bucks. Joao Fernandes Beach is more touristy and crowded, but a cool place to grab lunch and hang out for a couple hours. Brava Beach is where you’ll find some nice surfing.
Hotels and places to sleep : There are several very nice upscale resorts and hotels in Buzios and I recommend staying at one if you’re with the right person. Since I was with a buddy, we stayed at a lower-end hotel in the city center called Mar-A-Mar Pousada. It was clean, quiet and relatively cheap. The best thing about Mar-A-Mar is that is was located in the city center - which is the focal pint for the night life in Buzios. So after a long night of partying it was easy to get home (no taxis to hunt down), and every day we would just jump in a water taxi to hit the beach. So I definitely recommend staying in the city center if you plan on going out at night.
Eating and drinking : There are a bunch of nice restaurants in the city center. There’s an open air creperie on the main street (I forgot the name) that is very popular and also turns into a nighttime hotspot around 11:00 PM.
Bars, clubs and nightlife : There are a few bars around the city center that you can easily find just by walking around, but undoubtly the most popular spot in Buzios is Privilege. This is the only club in town and they often have celebrity DJ’s spinning. The cover is something ridiculous, like $40 US, but if you want to tear it up in Buzios this is the place to go. If clubs are not your scene, then I recommend putting your feelers out for house parties while socializing on the beach during the day. Some of the best partying going on at Buzios is happening at local residents.
Shopping and things to buy : There are a bunch of upscale boutiques and good shopping if that’s your thing…
