Corniglia Overview

Corniglia has been steadily suspended over the sea since the 13th century. It doesn’t have as much buzz as the other towns of the Cinque Terre and is less than half the size of Vernazza – tallying approximately 240 residents – but still merits a visit. Corniglia is the third of the five villages and situated high above the sea. Its picturesque setting is surrounded by vines and terraces on three sides. The neighboring towns of Manarola and Vernazza, as well as Riomaggiore and Monterosso are accessible by train or walking trail.

Corniglia is probably the most quiet, and least visited, of the 5 villages, and for this reason makes for an excellent destination for those seeking a more tranquil location. Corniglia is the perfect place to practice the fine Italian are of dolce far niente – the sweetness of doing nothing.

Things to do in Corniglia

The view from atop this seaside town is stunning, but will truly be appreciated once you make the 400-step (33 flights of stairs) climb to the heart of the village. Like a horse chasing a carrot, think of the smooth, cool gelato that awaits you at Gelateria Artigianle once you reach the top.

If you’re looking for a laidback day, which is what you will find once in Corniglia, skip the ascent up “Lardarina” and follow the road, which leads from the train station into town. Ahh, you’ve made it. You can spend the rest of the day strolling the main drag, Via Fieschi while sipping local wines and gorging on the catch of the day.
