Khon Kaen
Overview
Khon Kaen, at the heart of the Isaan region is an interesting destination sat in the Northeast of Thailand. Whereas it may not have the popularity and instant attraction of Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai, it actually lies in one of the country’s most picturesque and striking provinces and provides, for those who land here, an excellent insight into the prevailing local customs and traditions.
Although a bustling city, being slightly off the beaten track means it receives far less travelers than its famous counterparts, however, this does not hamper the possibilities for enjoyment and exploration. In fact, there is plenty to do in Khon Kaen, from visiting the Chonnabot Silk District to relaxing around the lake and temples to discovering the pristine countryside to partying the night away with the large student population.
With buses and a/c coaches departing at all hours of the day to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Udon Thani, amongst others, the city is easily accessible yet far enough away from the overly commercial crowd. Trains also make the 8 hour journey from Khon Kaen into Bangkok. Tuk-tuks and songthaews are readily available for short trips around town.
A visit to Khon Kaen will either provide a return to dining and sleeping comforts, following an adventure through the Northeast, or an ideal base from where to get out and uncover the lesser traveled routes and even the opportunity to head on to Vientiane in Laos.
