Billed as Spain’s answer to St Tropez and with a motto of “a way of life”, Marbella is at the forefront of Europe’s hip and trendy resorts and a true playground for the rich and famous. Fringed by the Sierra Blanca range in the far south of the country, the immensely cosmopolitan city, sitting at the shores of the inviting Costa del Sol, is awash with fancy cars, luxury resorts, world-class golf courses and marinas chock full with sparkling yachts.
Those on a holiday shoestring may be put off by the lavish claims and reputations of the city; however, it is surprisingly accessible to all wallets, with a fair share of budget accommodation and the prevalence of a bundle of ordinary life amongst the millionaire circles. For a taste of how life of the former fishing village was before the influx of the cool crowd in the 1960s, take a stroll around the Old Town and Plaza de los Naranjos. The encompassing spiders web of narrow streets and alleys are where the majority of the towns’ original architecture and traditional bars and cafés, frequented by the ordinary people, are located.
Back to the money, for those wanting to live like a king, or at least pretend for a day, the Golden Mile, stretching from the edge of the city to Puerto Banus, is home to the regions most exclusive residential properties and 5-star hotels backed by the finest golf clubs. If the Ferrari is unavailable then drop down beachside and take a walk from the Old Town to Puerto Banus, marvel at the vast array of yachts and boats and people watch from one of the many marina cafés.
At first sight, a pure money burner, although, with some careful planning, Marbella can be a great all round destination and a fascinating place from where to see a true blend of old meeting the new.
Marbella Beaches
With 27km of coastline, it is hard to go wrong when choosing a beach to lie upon and soak up the never-ending sunshine amongst one of a number of inviting sandy coves. Three of the more popular spots, safe for swimming and good for water-sports, are Playa de la Badajilla, Playa de Venus and Playa de la Fontanilla. For a quiet spot, head south to El Ancon or El Cable, close to the fishing port.
