Mui Ne Overview

On the east coast of Vietnam, the small beach resort of Mui Ne is fast becoming one of the most popular getaways and the wind and kite surfing capital of the country. Witness to a boom in tourism and development over the past 10 years, the beach town is one of lazy palm fringed beaches, vibrant local markets, ancient ruins and fine seafood dining.

Only 200km from Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne is now well connected, particularly throughout the high season. Open-tour buses are the best option, stopping of at Ho Chi Minh, Nha Trang. For Phan Thiet there are sporadic local buses, although xe-oms are usually a better alternative. It is almost impossible to get lost here, especially with the hoards of xe-om drivers hanging around and the opportunity to rent bicycles and motorbikes.

Although fast developing, Mui Ne clings hard to its laidback surfer vibe, with the onus still remaining on beach life, and is arguably the friendliest spot throughout Vietnam, devoid of pestering touts. The main beach Mui Ne/Rang Beach stretches for 16km, culminating at the north end in a picturesque harbor and fishing village. Spend an afternoon wandering the harbor and admiring the array of colorful boats before stopping by the vibrant market to pick up some fine fresh fish.

Around the bay the beaches stretch further, backed by smooth rolling sand dunes. Pass by at sunrise or sunset to experience the dunes dramatically changing color and providing the perfect photo opportunity. Protected by these dunes, Mui Ne boasts a superb climate, with only light rain during the wet season, making it a true year round destination.

Things to do in Mui Ne

Po Shanu Cham Towers - 9th Century complex of tower ruins and cemetery set atop Phan Thiet hill. Although not being immediately striking, there are exceptional views of Mui Ne from the hilltop.

Takou Mountain - An hours drive from Mui Ne, the mountain sits in the Ta Kou Nature Reserve, an area of rolling hills and abundant wildlife. At the peak of the mountain, which can be reached via a trek or gondola trip, are a pagoda, temples, tomb towers and a 49m reclining Buddha.

Fairy Springs - Small scenic river that weaves its way from the ocean through an area of sand dunes, passing some interesting rock formations. Wading your way upstream, makes for an enjoyable afternoon hike as the area is rich in local wildlife.

Mui Ne Water Sports - The beaches and warm waters of Mui Ne provide the perfect setting to swim, snorkel, scuba dive and surf. With pristine coral reefs, Ca Na Beach, northwest of Mui Ne, is arguably the best spot for snorkeling and scuba diving with Vietnam Scuba operating tours (although their website lacks English info). Wind and kite surfing continue to grow in popularity and a wealth of centres can be found along the main beach offering competitive rentals and lessons. Check out Full Moon Beach & Jibes Beach Club and Storm Kiteboarding Centre.

Learn to Cook Vietnamese - Learn the secrets to preparing your favorite Vietnamese dishes at Mui Ne Cooking School, located at the Sunshine Beach Resort. Take a walk through Ham Tien market, learning about and collecting ingredients, before returning beachside to cook and sample the delights.

Mui Ne Nightlife - Mui Ne has an eclectic night scene, with something lively going on most nights of the week around the collection of classic backpacker beach joints and stylish lounge bars. Pogo Bar is somewhat of an institution with its laidback vibe, hammocks, sporting activities and DJ nights. Jibes Beach Club is a favourite for the surfer crowd, with great music, happy hours and full moon parties. Head to Hoa Vien for some great beer brewed onsite and, for a gamble, try The Club.
