Mykonos Travel Guide

Mykonos Overview

Spectacular sunsets, golden beaches, lavish resorts, glamorous nightlife, beautiful people and classic Greek charm..welcome to the island of Mykonos. Although one of the smaller Cyclade Islands, Mykonos has a larger than life cosmopolitan character, which has been drawing admirers to its shores since the influx of the hippy brigade in the late 1960s. Today, with visitors from all over the world, it remains a popular destination for those looking to combine natural beauty, unlimited beach life and endless summer partying.

The pristine beaches, crystal clear waters and unlimited drinking and dining options are renowned the world over, however, perhaps the most endearing aspect of the island is the ability of the traditional roots and charms to shine through amidst the chaos. Mykonos town, with its typically mazelike design of streets and alleys, lined with whitewashed houses, epitomises the magnificence of a Cycladic town. By day, when the majority head out to the beaches, get lost amongst the towns historic beauty, elegantly complemented by the array of galleries, cafés and shops. Then, following a busy day of walking, drop down to Little Venice and enjoy some waterside local cuisine and cocktails. Should the town and beaches become to hectic then jump on a boat bound for the island of Delos, the birthplace, as far as mythology is concerned, of Apollo and Artemis. Become submersed in the history of Pan Hellenics most important sanctuary, with its ancient temples and statues.

With its own airport, Mykonos is easily accessible from mainland Greece, Athens and Thessaloniki, and other islands, including Rhodes and Kos. During the high season, the islands airport also sees direct charter arrivals from all corners of Europe. Boat and catamaran services are also popular for island hopping between the island and Santorini, Naxos and Tinos.
