Overview : Napoli is as authentic as southern Italy gets. It’s a city of contrasts as at times it can be stunningly beautiful; the views, the people, the food, and also quite dangerous and dirty. It’s a real city and it takes a few days to get use to the chaotic flow of traffic, people and insane herds of Vespas riders. The views of the bay of Napoli and around Castel Nuovo are incredible, but there’s a dark side to Napoli. The crime rate is high, there are many poor people and in certain neighborhoods you really have to take care. Still, even with its legendary crime and crime families, Napoli is well worth the visit. It’s probably the most genuine place I have been to in Italy.
Things to see and do : There is so much to do in Napoli. First, eating, the food is fantastic. There’s a lot of history in Napoli and several very interesting museums (I recommend Museo Archeologico Nazionale). I went on an underground tour of Napoli (I believe it called Napoli Sotterranea – check www.larryray.com/napolibelow.htm) and I highly recommend this tour. It will basically blow your mind. I also enjoy living like the Italians live and just hanging out in the piazzas – I recommend Piazza Bellini (cool cafes and restaurants – a great place to have a beer) and Piazza del Gesu Nuovo.
Hotels and places to sleep : There are a bunch of places to stay in Napoli for all budgets. I recommend that you do not stay anywhere around Piazz Garibaldi (Stazione Centrale) as this is a very seedy part of town. I like staying in the old city center -around Piazza San Domenico Maggiore.
Bars, clubs and nightlife : There are a bunch of cool bars around Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. Napoli is big into rock-n-roll and punk rock. Some of it is pretty bad, but usually good for a laugh.
Dangers and annoyances : Napoli is no joke. People will try to rob you on the streets -even during the day – watch out for the vespa bandits. Watch your wallet and keep you bar or purse securely around your body. I don’t want to scare you---you should go to Napoli, just uses common sense and take extra care and everything will be fine.
