Overview : I thought it might be helpful for someone visiting New York to take a look at a list of my favorite NY restaurants. Most of these are considered mid-range price-wise for New York, and frequented by residents of NYC.
Eating and drinking : 1. Jin Sushi. 252 Broom St (at Orchard). 212.979.0989. Jin is my favorite neighborhood sushi bar. They have an excellent menu, fresh staff and excellent sushi. Located in the hip Lower Eastside neighborhood with many other restaurant liand bar/lounge options. http://www.jinrestaurantnyc.com

2. Rice on Elizabeth. 292 Elizabeth St (at Houston). 212.226.5775. Located just north of Houston in the NoHo neighborhood, Rice is quality cheep eats. Cool place to eat and totally affordable. They specialize in rice dishes and cross a few different ethnic lines such as Mexican, Indian, Spanish, etc. They also deliver (and do so to me often). http://www.riceny.com

3. Wild Ginger. 380 Broome St (at Mott). 212.966.1883. I’m not one who preaches about the benefits of vegan food –I’m always down for a good burger- but Wilde Ginger offers an excellent selection of Pan-Asian vegan dishes. It’s on my regular routine, it’s totally affordable and I always feel good after the meal. I should mention it taste good too (not like most of my vegan experiences). I highly recommend this if you’re a healthy eater.

4. Barrio Chino. 253 Broom St (at Orchard) 212.228.6710. Located on an up-and-coming Broome street in the LES, Barrio Chino is a hip Mexican/Tequila bar. The atmosphere is LES slummin’ while the Mexican food is yuppified (you pieces of pineapple on your tacos, etc). The food excellent, fun vibe and affordable (as long as you stay away from those $25 tequilas). Somewhat crowded so you might want to call for a table. http://www.barriochinonyc.com

5. Doyers. 11 Doyers St (Chinatown). 212.513.1527. This Vietnamese restaurant is the real deal. The food is dirt cheep and absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone (Vietnamese connoisseur or first-timer). Look for it on the apex of the curve on Doyers Street (downstairs).

6. Dos Caminos 475 W Broadway (at Houston). 212.277.4300. Another yuppified Mexican restaurant with decent food and fun atmosphere. Outside seating in the summer – lots of pretty people.

7. Pastis. 9 Ninth Avenue (right across from the Gansevoort Hotel). 212.929.5676. This is a cool French bistro in the cool-than-thou Meatpacking District. I like their steaks and burgers (but I’m pretty sure they have other fancy French stuff on the menu). http://www.pastisny.com

8. Buddakan. 75 Ninth Avenue (at 16th St). 212.989.6612. This is more of a special occasion spot for me. It’s very hip and expensive. I think they call it Asian Fusion. Whatever—it’s pretty damn good and always a good time – but it will cost you. http://www.buddakannyc.com

9. Stanton Social. 99 Stanton Street (at Ludlow). 212.995.0099. Another hip LES restaurant. A little on the expensive side but worth it if you’re with the right girl (or guy). Cool lounge upstairs. And if you don’t want to have a full meal you can eat small tapa plates all night. Excellent cocktails as well. http://www.thestantonsocial.com

10. La Esquina. 106 Kenmar (at Lafayette). 646.613.7100. From the street this place looks like an old fashion dinner (I think that’s what it used to be), but you have to walk in and ask to be taken to the restaurant downstairs. To get to the restaurant you have to walk through a series of stairs and hallways (as well as the kitchen full of Mexican kitchen workers). Once in the restaurant/bar area you see that you have arrived in one of the coolest underground restaurants in the city. Excellent Spanish food, fun atmosphere, hip crowd. http://www.esquinanyc.com
