Palolem Travel Guide

Palolem Overview

Palolem, in South Goa, with its half moon white sandy beach, encompassed by a forest of swaying coconut palm trees, is undoubtedly one of Indias most idyllic beaches. Add to this the crystal blue waters of the Arabian Sea and the surrounding hilly green countryside, the perfect getaway destination unravels in a wave of tranquility, attracting visitors from far and wide.

The majority of the action, unsurprisingly, takes place around the beach, with an array of beach hut or beach shack accommodation and restaurants spreading out along the stunning stretch of sand. The village and market area, made up of a handful of streets, are aligned with stores selling Indo-European clothing, restaurants and bars. Due to its size, Palolem is easy to explore on foot, although at night a torch may come in handy, as roads to the hotels are without lighting.

Being in South Goa, it is often, for those arriving from Karnataka and Kerala, the first stop on the Goan beach trail and a perfect base from where to explore the neighboring villages and beaches. Motorcycles are readily available to rent for those wishing to check out Patnem beach, 2km south, and the village life, inland at Canacona.

Palolem is served by good transport connections via both bus and train. From the bus stand, on the beach road, hourly services depart for Margao and frequently to Chaudi. For other destinations, the best option is to take a bus to Chaudi from where services connect to destinations further a field, including Mangalore. A number of trains, running south to Karnataka and north through Central and North Goa, stop at Canacona station, which is only a short rickshaw ride from town.

The traditional village life, laid back beach vibe and party atmosphere all come together to make Palolem a unique and loveable town and a place where the visitor is never far away from peace.

Guests are given headphones to listen to music, usually house/trance, in order to reduce noise pollution and allow the party to go on for longer.

With a range of tourists, from locals to honeymooners to backpackers, dining in Palolem is a fantastic experience. Shacks lining the beach serve up fresh fish and seafood all day long and are a great place to enjoy a Kingfisher beer whilst watching the spectacular sunset. Magic Italy, on the road leading from the beach, is the most popular in town, especially with homesick travelers, and they have made themselves a reputation for wood-fired pizzas and lasagna. For a 100% healthy option, local vendors stroll up and down the beach offering delicious and succulent papaya and pineapple.
