Title: Long weekend in Playa

Overview : I went with a buddy to Playa for a long weekend in November. I’ve been there about 10 years ago, back when it was a hippyish backpacker destination, and was surprised at how much it had changed. The new Playa is hip, busy and expensive. Although there is not much culture left in Playa, the beach is incredible, there are plenty of good party spots and the weather is perfect. It’s a great place for a long weekend, but not sure if I would stay much longer than that.
Things to see and do : I rented a jeep and we cruised down the cost to Tulum where there are some pretty cool Mayan ruins set right on the water. Tulum also has excellent beaches with a few backpacker type hangouts. It’s a cool destination and is definitely worth seeing. If you’re looking for a quite alternative to Playa you might like this place. Besides Tulum, there are jungle and cenote tours, and the obvious scuba diving. I only had time for one dive, and it was awesome, as the water and diving off Playa and Cozumel is world class.
Hotels and places to sleep : I stayed at Hotel Fusion. It’s a cool place located right on the beach (on the south end of the beach). The higher end, trendy resorts are located on the northern end of the beach. The hotel has all the amenities anyone would want – clean room, bed, shower, restaurant and friendly waitresses who bring you beer all day long on the beach.
Eating and drinking : There are a lot of new, upscale restaurants in Playa. I didn’t have a bad meal the entire weekend. If you walk down the main street, 5th avenue, you will find plenty of great spots.
Bars, clubs and nightlife : The nightlife in Playa can be a little cheesy if you ask me. The place I like the best was Sail, it’s actually a hip, open air hotel bar on the 2nd floor, right on 5th ave, Om is also pretty cool. Most people go to the Blue Parrot, and I suppose it’s ok if you like the ultra cheesy college crowd – not really my scene.
Shopping and things to buy : Buy a cowboy hat; everybody seems to buy a cowboy hat while visiting Playa
Packing lists : Suntan lotion, lot’s and lot’s of suntan lotion.
Dangers and annoyances : Playa is relatively safe. A lot of people travel there with their young kids and think it’s totally save enough for that.
Additional comments : Although I rented a jeep for the 4 day weekend, I really only used it once for my trip to Tulum. You can easily get a cheep shuttle or taxi at the Cancun airport to take you to Playa. Once in Playa there is really no need for a car unless you plan on doing day-trips. Feel free to send me a note if you have any questions.
