Praia da Joaquina Travel Guide

Praia da Joaquina Overview

Praia da Joaquina, Florianópolis is known for its massive sand dunes and fantastic waves. This beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island and is a must see if you are visiting Ilha de Santa Catarina.   The infrastructure here has been built-out for tourism; there’s a considerable amount of parking, hotels, bars, restaurants, lifeguards, restrooms, and public showers at Praia Joaquina.

Praia da Joaquina, Ilha de Santa Catarina is a place for fun, sun and surf. Located on the eastern side of Ilha de Santa Catarina (Praia Joaquina leste da Ilha Florianopolis), it is a surfers paradise. The waves at Praia da Joaquina are ideal for surfing and it has been host to several international surfing championships. So expect to seat least a few of well-chiseled surfer-types hanging around.
The vibe a Joaquina has been changing over the past few years, moving away from the young party crowd and becoming more and more a family oriented beach. You can rent chairs and umbrellas for about R$10 and there are plenty of food vendors and restaurants to take care of your basic needs. There are 3 restaurants at Joaquina that essentially all have the same seafood heavy menu and extremely high prices. The north end of the beach, the side closest to the access road, is often packed with chairs, umbrellas and people swimming in the water.   The water is crisp and excellent for cooling off or taking a nice long swim.
At night Joaquina is completely flat (no activity). After all of the days beach-goers have gone, the place becomes very quiet and peaceful. There is no nightlife in Joaquina, but it’s only about a 10 min drive to Lagoa da Conceicao which offer’s the most nightlife per square mile in all of Ilha de Santa Catarina. Therefore staying at a hotel in Joaquina is not a bad option providing you have a car.
