Puerto Escondido Overview

Sat on the southern tip of Mexico’s Pacific coast and still very much driven by its fishing community roots, Puerto Escondido (or HiddenPort) is a little gem of a tourist destination. Quite possibly the most easy going town in the whole of the country, its reputation is garnered by a combination of stunning beaches, renowned surf breaks, great local restaurants and a stylish yet laidback nightlife scene.
Those who find their way here soon discover why it is so loved by locals and those in the know. Days generally take the form of hitting the beach for a surf class or spot of sun worshipping, then magnificent sunsets followed by dinner and drinks at the Adoquin or Playa Zicatela, the two main nightlife zones. What’s more, Puerto Escondido is accessible to everyone with accommodation available for US$5 hostels to luxury boutique hotels.
Puerto Escondido is situated around 350km south of Oaxaca with bus journey times ranging from 6 to 10 hours. It is also possible to fly in from both Oaxaca and Mexico City, however, in high season particularly, the cheap seats get snapped up quickly. Once arrived, everything you need is within easy walking distance of the commercial Adoquin area. For the lazy, taxis are readily available and the more active may wish to rent mountain bikes.
For now Puerto Escondido continues to live up to its HiddenPort name, however as popularity increases it is difficult to say how life will develop. Nevertheless, with wildlife rich national parks, coffee farms and nesting ridley turtles all close at hand; it will be many years before its appeal even begins to show the slightest hint of fading.

Things to do in Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido Beaches
With a grand selection and something for everyone, the beach is where all the action is at in Puerto Escondido. Playa Zicatela witnessed the main action and is bless with various cafés, restaurants and hotels. It is also home to the famed Mexican Pipeline, thus a hotspot for surfers. Bahia (or Playa) Principal is a long stretch of beach home to sun worshippers, families, body boarders, a fishing fleet and “Adoquin“, a pedestrian commercial and nightlife zone. Another attractive spot is Playa Carrizalillo, accessed by a 170-step staircase and popular for swimming, snorkelling and hanging out at the food shacks.
Surfing Puerto Escondido
Home to the Mexican Pipeline, Puerto Escondido has made a name for itself as one of Mexico’s top surf destinations and a favoured spot for beginners. There are a number of surf schools for those looking to take classes, including Oasis Surf Academy and the ever-busy Puerto Escondido Surf House. Central Surf is a good option for rentals. Keep an eye on the calendar for the Quiksilver Pro surf contest.
Puerto Escondido Water Sports
Characteristic of Mexico, the town has developed a reputation for both snorkelling and diving, with plenty of competition around town. Puerto Dive Center and Deep Blue Dive are two reputable companies offering PADI courses, trips and equipment rental. For fishing and dolphin spotting trips, Omar Sportfishing is the place to go.
Puerto Escondido Day Trips
If the beach is not enough then there are plenty of activities to enjoy within close proximity to Puerto Escondido. Rutas de Aventura organise kayaking trips, hiking trials, mountain bike tours and walks to waterfalls. Coffee lovers should check our Finca Las Nieves coffee farm and for nature lovers Chacahua Lagoon National Park can be reached in under an hour.
Puerto Escondido Nightlife
Watching the sun drift down is a must in Puerto Escondido and the beaches are lined with some great places to enjoy the spectacle. The best views are found from La Galeria and rooftop bar of Hotel Flor de Maria. Following sunset the town lights up around the Adoquin and Playa Zicatela. Current hotspots count the laidback Casa Babylon, Bar Fly and La Piedra de la Iguana.
