Overview :

Rio  Known for over the top festivals – particularly Carnival- scantly clad women, samba dancing and general debauchery, Rio is an international party goers must visit.

Things to see and do :

Rio is defined by its fantastically vibrant beaches strewn with thong bikinis and beautiful women.  If you’re a man you’re going to want to spend some time at the beach.  And, for that matter, if you’re a woman you’re going to want to spend some time at the beach checking out the Brazilian men in their thongs. Brazilian men have no shame.   There are 23 beaches in Rio, and I haven’t been to all of them (yet) but here are a few of my favorites:

Ipanema Beach
Ipanema Beach at posto 9½.  I found this to be the coolest beach in Rio.  All the hip kids hang at posto 9½.  You can rent some chairs and umbrella or just brink a bleach blanket.

Prainha Beach
Good for surfing.

Grumari Beach
This beach is excellent on weekends.  There’s clean sand and water, but few other amenities.

Copacabana Beach
Generally I detest Copacabana because of all of the tourists and filth, but the beach at Copacabana is ok.  There are a few volleyball nets and people playing soccer.

Other things to do:
Take a cable car to Pão de Açúcar and explore Centro.
Check out Museu de Arte Moderna
Check out Catedral de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, a 1960’s cathedral that looks like a beehive (Av. Republica do Chile 245, Centro).
Take the cable car from Centro to the hillside neighborhood of Santa Teresa – it’s a great place for lunch or dinner.

Bars, clubs and nightlife :

ASA Branca

Av. Mem de Sa 17, Lapa

Big nightclub with live music in Lapa – this is where the local hang.

Rio Scenarium

Rua do Lavradio 20, Lapa

Hip lounge in Lapa – mostly young locals hipsters (get there early)

Melt

Rua Rita Ludolf 47, Leblon

Pretty cool, upscale lounge/club

Packing lists : pack a swimsuit and plenty of suntan lotion.
Dangers and annoyances : Rio is dangerous - dont let that stop you from going but always take care.
