Santorini
Overview
When the volcano erupted in c1650 BC nobody could have imagined the dramatic effect it was to have on the island. Today, Santorini, or Thira as it is known as by the locals, is one of the world’s most breathtaking natural wonders, blessed with stunning beaches, a striking yet curious landscape and ancient villages, seemingly waiting to crumble into the ocean. Part of the Cyclades group of islands, Santorini sits between Ios and Anafi and is somewhat of a mecca for travelers of all varieties.
Characteristic of a Greek island, Santorini boasts crystal waters, pristine sands, timeless villages, endless sunshine and fine dining, however maintains a unique and captivating atmosphere that distinguishes it from the rest. Explore the cliff-hanging caldera and the labyrinth of alleyways at Fira, the vibrant island capital. Jump north to quieter Oia and join the hoards of admirers at sunset. Marvel at the ruins of the ancient cities of Akrotiri (thought to have been destroyed during the great eruption) and Mesa Vouno, enjoy the volcanic beach and traditional fish restaurants at Perissa or take it easy on Kamari Beach. Whatever the pleasure there is certainly something for everyone on this unique paradise.
A consequence of Santorini’s popularity is that there is rarely a quiet time, although this seldom detracts from one’s enjoyment. Ferries and catamarans constantly zip in and out of the main port from Anafi, Ios, Naxos, Paros, Milos and Mykonos. Whereas catamarans arrive considerably faster, it may be worth arriving on one of the slow ferries which provide the opportunity to gaze in awe at the colorful cliffs and caldera from the open deck. Alike any island, the use of two feet is the best way to explore and uncover the many hidden delights.

Things to do in
Santorini
Sightseeing Santorini:
Landscape, scenery and sunsets - A large factor in drawing eager visitors to Santorini is its dramatic and breathtaking landscapes, made possible from the volcanic explosion which occurred some centuries ago. Marvel at how the town of Thira perches precariously on the cliff face with houses, temples and other ancient ruins. Be sure to find a good spot to enjoy one of the finest sunsets known across the world, where, from some towns, the sun disappears into the volcano.
The Museum of Prehistoric Thera - Wonderful museum housing a grand collection of artefacts and colourful wall paintings discovered at Akrotiri, the ancient city discovered beneath volcanic ash. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 8.30am - 3pm. Entrance €2.
Santorini Wine Tour - Take a tour of any of the many vineyards on the island, arguably the finest in Greece, learn about the cultivating techniques and then sample the delights created from Santorini’s unique indigenous grape. A bonus of the tours are that the vineyards are located in some of the islands most beautiful and scenic regions.
Sailing Santorini:
Santorini Sailing - Santorini, as anywhere in the Aegean Sea, is a great place to enjoy a leisurely sailing trip. Admire the likes of Akrotiri, Red Beach and the Caldera from a luxury catamaran, dive into the turquoise water for a few hours of snorkelling and then climb back aboard and enjoy fine cuisine and BBQs. Places on tours can be booked individually or as a group charter.
Scuba Diving Santorini:
The clean warm waters of the Aegean Sea offer many excellent diving sites as well as a shipwreck close to the volcano. Both beginners and seasoned-pros are able to enjoy the delights and those not wishing to don the full scuba gear can always take to the waters for a spot of, equally rewarding, snorkelling. Aegean Divers at Pyrgos and Santorini Dive Center at Caldera Beach offer competitive packages.
Santorini Nightlife:
As the sun goes down Santorini lights up as much as any other Greek island, albeit in a more stylish and classy manner. Check out Tropical Bar at Fira for great cocktails and unsurpassed sunset views. The main drinking and party scene focuses around the Town Square at Fira, with Enigma Club and Koo Club being the hottest spots. Over at Kamari on the east coast, Groove Bar and the Albatross Club pull in the crowds.
