United Kingdom Travel Guide

United Kingdom Overview

The United Kingdom offers truly a complete package in terms of travel goals. Between England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, visitors can experience several different cultures, climates, and myriad attractions. This is a land where nature and history conspire to create magic in every corner. Travelers are advised to focus on a single region if time is limited.

England boasts everything from the world-class urban scene of London to the seaside resorts like Brighton. London is a complete destination in itself, with amazing West End theater, top-drawer museums, Chelsea shopping, and historic gems like the Tower of London, Westminster, and Buckingham Palace.

Even more urban fun can be found in Liverpool, Manchester, and Leeds. The range of small towns and hamlets in England is endless. Scotland is also a treat, with incredible city energy in Edinburgh and Glasgow and some beautiful countryside in the Highlands and along the many lochs (lakes).

Castles, both ruined and in beautiful shape, litter every corner of the UK, offering travelers plenty of opportunity to pause and step back into another age. If pastoral countryside is your thing, Wales won’t disappoint. This lightly-traveled land is as rural as it gets in the UK, though the capital Cardiff and the city of Swansea are quite buzzing.

Northern Ireland is the smallest piece of the United Kingdom, but no slouch when it comes to cool towns and natural beauty. Belfast is a great little city with fantastic pubs, but the highlights here are really the natural wonders, such as Giant’s Causeway, the Glens of Antrim, and the Mourne Mountains.

Things to do in United Kingdom

Indulge yourself in London – London is quite expensive, but few cities on earth can match its shopping, dining, nightlife, pub scene, or museums.

Savour London’s regal heritage – from the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London to the architectural majesty of Westminster, and the cool changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, England’s capital is overflowing with amazing historic sites.

Get to know Edinburgh – Scotland’s capital is a really cool city, with a magical medieval core, an inspiring hilltop castle, gardens running amok, and loads of Scot-chic cafés, bars, and boutiques.

Walk with the giants – the main reason to visit Northern Ireland is the surreal natural sites on its craggy northern coast, such as the Giant’s Causeway and the soothing countryside epitomised by the Glens of Antrim.

Lose yourself in England’s museums – plan several days to soak in the treasures within the British Museum, the Tate Modern, and the National Gallery, all conveniently located in London.

Go cathedral hopping – targeting England’s immaculate Gothic cathedrals at York, Canterbury, Winchester, and Salisbury is a fun way to tour of the countryside.
