Vietnam Travel Guide

Vietnam Overview

Clinging to the southern tip of China and curving around Laos to the foot of Cambodia is the enchanting land of Vietnam, a country boasting an incredible coastline of over 3000km, dramatic landscapes, endless lush green rice paddies, lazy meandering rivers and countless ancient religious sites. Many come to Vietnam for its magnificent beaches and delectable cuisine, yet with its addictive fast-paced cities and hospitable people there is a lot more than what lies on the surface.

For a long time better known as a country of colonization, uprising and war, today, having moved on from the troublesome era, Vietnam is fast becoming a contender for top spot on the South East Asian circuit. In fact, although harrowing at times, it is the gripping history and locals honor, proud of their hard-fought independence, which has laid the foundations for the mystical charm that triumphs today.

Opportunities for adventure are boundless in Vietnam, stretching from the Chinese border to the islands floating peacefully off the south coast. Sample the effervescent energy of the capital Hanoi and the enchanting natural wonderland of HalongBay in the north. Stay central for a cultural education at Hue, drop in at the beachside towns of Hoi An and Nha Trang, then take in the fresh air at hilly Da Lat. The south is the place to be for the nations popular beach destinations, with Mui Ne, and Hon Chong within easy reach of action-packed Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). When in the south, dont forget to explore the lesser traveled floating communities along the Mekong Delta.

With buses, trains, boats, motorbikes and bicycles all readily available, traveling around Vietnam can be an unforgettable and enjoyable experience. The cheapest mode of transport is the hoards of low-cost buses, running to all corners of the country at all hours of the day. Lucky travelers may even find themselves on a bus equipped with TV and karaoke machine, although the latter may not be so desirable for long journeys. Train travel is somewhat cheaper and, whereas journeys are far longer, they provide the opportunity to relax in comfort and enjoy the changing landscapes. Hardened train travelers might like to tackle the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City service, a 30-hour trip, stopping off at numerous major towns along the coast.

One thing not to be missed is the opportunity to travel the extensive waterways of Vietnam, in particular the Mekong Delta and calm waters of HalongBay. Increasing in popularity is the use of motorbikes, allowing total freedom and flexibility to get to the remotest of regions. Also on two wheels, cycling is an enjoyable and adventurous way of seeing the country, especially when staying at the coastal towns and riverside cities.

Whereas some come for a relaxing vacation and others for pure adventure, one guarantee is that Vietnam never fails to impress and more often than not leaves the traveler wanting more. Alike its South East Asian counterparts, try not to blink as the unexpected can and most likely will occur.
