Vinh Long
Overview
Vinh Long is a dusty and chaotic South Vietnamese town on the banks of the Mekong River. Although not bursting with tourist attractions, the town is the perfect place from where to explore the collection of fascinating river islands, floating markets and abundant surrounding fruit orchards, from where the locals govern their living. Back in town, the sprinkling of riverside restaurants provide a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of town.
Around 120km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, buses depart regularly on the relatively short 3-hour journey. Services from the town centre bus stand also run to and from Can Tho, My Tho and other Mekong Delta destinations. As a small riverside town and with buses dropping passengers off in its heart, the majority of hotels and restaurants sit within walking distance from one another.

Things to do in
Vinh Long
Mekong River Tour - By far the highlight of a visit to Vinh Long is a cruise along the Mekong River, visiting the many islands along the way, experiencing the prevailing traditional lifestyle and marveling at stilted houses built in the river. Cuu Long Tourist organize numerous tours, ranging from 4/5 hours to overnight homestays. Of the islands, Binh Hoa Phuoc and An Binh are the most popular.
Cai Be Floating Market - Lively river market which sees sellers mooring their boats full of fruits and vegetables and local buyers breezing through eyeing up their purchases. The market runs from 5am to 5pm, although the best action takes place early on, with buyers eager to get the best produce. What sets Cai Be apart from other floating markets is the presence of a cathedral on the banks of the river. The market is around 1-hour from Vinh Long and is often included as part of a day exploring the surrounding canals and orchards.
Van Thanh Mieu Temple - Large and striking riverside temple around 3km southeast of town. The front/main wall contains a memorial to Phan Thanh Gian, a local hero famed for leading the 1930 rebellion against French colonist.
