On The Virgin

Island Hopping

There's a lot of landscape to be seen out there, but after a continent or two, you may want to swap train tracks for trade winds and check out the watery part of the world.  Of course, you may want to narrow it down a bit, so we'd suggest you try out the Carribean first. And, if you want to get even narrower, we suggest a trip among the sixty specks of leafy land known as the British Virgin Islands.

You'll start out in Tortola, a city known as much for its discreet bankers as its pristine beaches—when they say "offshore," this is what they mean—but we recommend you ride the winds east for a tour of some of the smaller islands before you end up at Virgin Gorda, an eight square-mile island with a few dazzling ruins and some beaches well worth the trip. It's perfect for water-skiing, snorkeling, and even a few of the more adventurous sailing tricks.

As for sightseeing, the biggest highlight is "the Baths," a geologic formation (i.e. pile of rocks) at the southern tip of Virgin Gorda where granite boulders have been worn down by the sea into arches, tunnels and grottos perfect for spending a few hours out of the sun. It's one of the more amazing sights in the Carribean…especially if you're lucky enough to see it from the water.

If you're going to get that close, you'll need a good captain. We recommend Executive Escapes, which has the virtue of both a good captain and an excellent chef. Their vessel holds (and feeds) up to six guests at a time, so if you have five seaworthy friends, you might have quite a getaway on your hands…..provided you put together the right crew.
