There’s a lot of beach on the Mediterranean, but if you take it upon yourself to make a survey of the northern half, you might notice a trend. As you head east, things get wilder.
A quick trek from Marseilles to Nice is a nice enough start, but the dedicated souls will continue down the coast to Genoa, Rome, Trieste, getting gradually less inhibited as the journey goes on. By the time you get to Croatia, all bets are off. Which should mean you’re about ready for the island of Pag.
It’s one of the most popular on the eastern Adriatic, but it’s a small enough scene—and far enough out of the way of most Western vacationers—that you should have enough room to do just about whatever you want. Zrce beach in particular is renowned for a 24-hour party scene at clubs like Aquarius, Kalypso and Papaya Club, all fueling one of the most unhinged scenes in central Europe. It’s enough to make Miami look like Stockholm.
Of course, even if the cabaret laws let you party through the night, medical science dictates that you’re going to have to sleep at some point. When you do, we recommend a recuperative spell at the Hotel Boškinac a low-key pension wedged between vineyards on the island’s quieter northern half. It’s a good place to recharge and take in a bit of traditional Croatian fare, at least until the next all-night rager.
As for venturing even farther down the coast…try it at your own risk.
