Escape from Cartagena

Diving Islas del Rosario

Cartagena has developed into quite the hot destination since shaking off its reputation as a 90s-era crime capital. The old-town is quaint and beautiful and worthy of an extended visit.  But while you’re there you might want to take a day to break from the city bustle—and there should be quite a bit of it— and seeking out some unusual accommodations a little farther off the beaten path. Here’s a hint: bring your snorkel.

The spot is Islas del Rosario, an archipelago just off the Colombian coast offering empty jungles, crystal clear water and quite possibly the perfect break from the busy streets of Cartagena. And lucky for you, they’re taking visitors.

First thing’s first: catch a ride out to the islands with an outfit called Dolphin Dive School.  They’ll have everything you need to get out on the water, including tanks, regulators and wet suits. Naturally, it won’t hurt if you’ve already got some scuba experience under your weight belt, but if you don’t they’re used to helping out less experienced divers.  They offer a several different dives including reef dives, open water dives and a wreck dive.

And, since you’ll want a full day out on the water, the Dolphin Dive folks have arranged lodging on of the small islands. The vibe is more like a hostel than a resort—that means bunk beds, a communal dining hall and a single lounge shared by the whole group—but if you’re feeling flush (or you’ve got a traveling companion who deserves some private attention), you can book one of the four suites and have the place all to yourself.

If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you could even take the opportunity to try a night dive, when the waters should have a little more mystique.

In case the secret island chain wasn’t enough for you.
